Georgetown Waterfront Park

Washington, DC

Design of an 8-acre park facing the Potomac River—the nation’s only national urban waterfront park. Nine years in the making, from master planning to design and construction, the park achieves a long-standing vision to transform the former industrial area into a civic landscape for rest, relaxation, and historic interpretation. Improvements include a promenade, bicycle trail, overlooks, a water feature, river steps, labyrinth, and extensive green infrastructure. (Ignacio performed this work with a previous firm.)

This design won the Honor and People’s Choice Award, ASLA, PA/DE Chapter, 2014

The pattern of walks and paths creates a layered juxtaposition of hardscape and softscape—a play between the town’s garden tradition and the waterfront’s history as a working wharf.
