Transit-Oriented Development
Whenever possible, the Collaborative creates compact, walkable, pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use communities centered around transit stations. This makes it possible for people to enjoy lives that are less dependent on cars. It helps support a feeling of community by promoting more face-to-face interactions. And it helps reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by reducing car trips.
Jefferson Station Transit-Oriented Development
Salem, MA
Director of Planning Jim Purdy worked under a previous affiliation on environmental documentation for the national multi-family housing developer JPI on the Jefferson at Salem project located adjacent to the Salem commuter rail station on the former Parker Brothers site.
He coordinated closely with site and traffic engineers to improve the on-site pedestrian circulation as well as key off-site improvements to be provided by the developer, including improvements necessary for mitigation under the Massachusetts DEP Chapter 91 license. Jim also worked with the developer to modify the site plan to afford views to the North River and provide a better fit with the historic context of the site. Working with the project’s legal counsel, he prepared the project’s Final Environmental Impact Report.
