SteelStacks Town Square
Bethlehem, PA
Design of the public areas supporting the redevelopment of the blast furnaces of the former Bethlehem Steel Corporation into a thriving Arts and Cultural campus. Anchored by the Levitt Pavilion and lawn amphitheater, the Square is home to a number of seasonal festivals, including the world-renowned Musikfest. Adjoining plazas provide additional venues for music, dining, markets, recreation, and public art in support of the non-profit ArtsQuest and PB39 studios. (Ignacio performed this work with a previous firm.)
A designed curve in the campus frontage road became the key that unlocked the site’s potential as an entertainment destination, with the Levitt Pavilion as its central feature.
This design won the following awards:
- Merit Award, Special Initiatives Category, American Institute of Architects, Tri-State, 2012
- Global Award of Excellence, Urban Land Institute, 2014
- Gold Medal, Ruddy Brunner Award, 2017, jointly with the Arts and Cultural Campus
