Woodruff Arts Center

Atlanta, GA

Collaborative Vice President Mike Morgan served as the landscape architectural lead for the expansion of the Woodruff Arts Center and Savannah College of Art and Design Woodruff campus in Atlanta, Georgia. While at Jordan Jones and Goulding, Mike’s role was to assure the site design complemented and enhanced Renzo Piano’s vision for the buildings.

The project’s intricate requirements included designing a roof garden that supported large trees above a gallery and studio space, overseeing mechanical and electrical design services for the site’s fountain system and selecting and installing a state-of-the-art radio-controlled irrigation with cistern and low-flow, drip heads.

A key site element was placement and siting of the “House III” sculpture by Roy Lichtenstein and protection of the “The Shade” sculpture by Auguste Rodin during construction.

Native plant materials were used throughout the site wherever possible. An allée of trees flanking a central plaza serves as a popular shaded, seating area. Landscaping of a nearby MARTA transit plaza provides commuter access to the Arts Center.
